In the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes I had a dream "Quilts For Christchurch"
A hug, to let the people of Christchurch know they were loved and cared for by people around the world. I put the call out on my blog and so many people responded.
Over 120 quilts were distributed.
Fiona – an expat living in London, responded to my call. Between her mother and herself they had many quilts made but with no home. So along with a group of very willing friends in their quilting group they parcelled up MANY quilts and sent to me for distribution.
Fast forward a few years and Fiona is back home in NZ and along with her Mum is the proud owner of a quilt shop in Gisborne, More Than Fabric.
Fiona and I are now 'in real life friends' having met in person in London, Auckland and more recently in Wellington at Handmade. Over a coffee or two in the knit lounge at Te Papa we talked about Christchurch and Quilts for Christchurch. Dinner out with Gillian of Mudbird Ceramics and our eyes were further opened to the very real fact life has not improved for a many people in Christchurch and winter especially is a real struggle.
The decision was made

Cat & Fiona, you are both amazing!! I remember that emotional conversation, which took me by surprise. Its because you have all shown so much love & care and continue to do so. And even after all this times its still such an emotional struggle living in Christchurch and so much healing to be done for those still stuck with unfixed homes & hurting children. A quilt will be a wonderful 'hug' & blessing to anyone, and a reminder that people still care and realise how hard it is xxx
..what Gill said. I fully appreciate the scale of endeavor Fiona is undertaking, and I love the name of her blog!
wonderful news. so good to know that people out there know the hardship isn't over. i have a friend with 4 kids, living in a mobile home over winter whilst her house is built. they just found out the foundation design doesn't meet criteria, so no consent...
such a caring idea, lovely to hear that part two is happening. it warms my heart to hear of wonderful projects like this xx
A beautiful project once again Cat. What a blessing. xx
good for you girls
